As a clinical psychologist, I am privileged to accompany individuals on their unique journeys towards self-discovery and change.
I would love to share with you a story of transformation that illustrates the power of cognitive therapy and mindfulness. This is the story of a 27-year-old European woman studying in Aarhus, who sought my help to overcome her insecurities and improve her self-esteem. (Please note that I changed some details to protect confidentiality.)
When she first reached out, she was grappling with insecurities that permeated all aspects of her life - personal, academic, and romantic. She was plagued by a constant fear of not meeting expectations, which led to conflict avoidance, people-pleasing, and anxious anticipation of potential problems. These defense mechanisms, while initially developed to protect her, were now impairing her life.
We did online therapy. In our first session, we created a safe space for her to open up about her life. As we explored her past, she had a profound realization - she had experienced psychological violence as a child, which had significantly impacted her self-perception and relationships. This revelation was a turning point for her, facilitating a shift in her perspective of herself and her past.
In our second session, she was introduced to the basics of cognitive therapy and began keeping a journal on her phone to explore her thoughts and feelings. This journaling practice became a powerful tool for her to identify and understand the patterns of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that were acting as problematic defense mechanisms.
Over the course of 16 sessions, we embarked on a transformative journey using cognitive therapy and mindfulness. She learned to objectively analyze her thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, which helped her disarm her problematic defense mechanisms. I guided her through various mindfulness exercises designed for her, which has helped her stay present and focused, reducing her anxiety and helping to manage her intrusive thoughts.
One of the most significant breakthroughs in her journey was overcoming her pattern of avoidance. She learned to open up to her friends, face conflicts, and set boundaries when feeling uncomfortable. She has also learned to deal with failure without punishing herself or attacking her self-esteem. These changes were key factors that has lead to a significant improvement in her self-esteem, confidence, and overall well-being.
Today, she continues to book a session once a month to work on her anxious eating habits and follow-up her progress. She has made remarkable progress in her journey toward self-discovery and change. Her progress inspires me to keep mastering the practice of Cognitive therapy and Mindfulness to help others to change and enjoy life.
My ultimate goal is to guide individuals on their journey toward self-discovery and change. If you or someone you know is struggling with similar issues, please reach out. Remember, it's never too late to start your journey towards change and self-discovery.
